| August 25th meeting! At Nesin Therapy @ 7:00. David Kyle will be speaking. |
| Aug
4, 2008
I just wanted to wish everyone competing at Mountain
Lakes this weekend the best of luck! Don't forget to wear those club
shirts while you are milling around and/or going up to collect your
awards. Race STRONG, race
FAST, and SMILE!
Also the HiWAAY sprint is right around the corner. Good luck to
everyone there as well, especially the beginners! I honestly hope
you have a great event, and get hooked on the greatest sport on
the planet. Well, one of the greatest sports at least, eh? On the
HiWAAY sprint subject, I would like to express my appreciation for
all of the interest we have had in the beginners' clinic. You are
all a great group of athletes and I have enjoyed working with each
of you. A special thanks to James Falcon for taking on the responsibility
of being their instructor for the past 5-6 weeks, your efforts are
greatly appreciated. This is exactly the kind on information sharing
and mentoring that Team ROCKET needs to be a part of.
Lastly... On Sunday the 17th of August is the Olympic distance race
in Fall Creek Falls, TN put on by Race Day Events. I would highly
urge any of you interested in Olympic distance to try this one.
It's a great race with a clean water, lake swim, moderately rolling
bike and a really nice, mostly shaded by large trees, run course
along paved trails.
(Now, here's my controversial input) George DeWitt might want to
kill me for saying this, but... Fall Creek Falls is the day after
the HiWAAY Sprint. I would like to encourage any of you more seasoned
triathletes to consider Fall Creek Falls in leau of the HiWAAY.
The reason I say that is I honestly believe the strong suit of the
HiWAAY Sprint is bringing new people into our sport. It serves that
purpose perfectly! There is also ABSOLUTELY NO SHORTAGE of entries
at the HiWAAY as it seems to reach full capacity each year.. HiWAAY
(3-in-1) at the time, is where I won my very first triathlon trophy,
and let me tell you, it really meant a lot to me! So, if you are
a very experienced triathlete, I would ask you to /*consider*/ stepping
out of the winners spotlight and let the new blood have a chance.
Just some food for thought.
Race STRONG, race FAST, and SMILE!

thanks to Jenny Johnson for setting this up our July meeting for us! |
David
Kyle (Our World Traveler) is in the News Again!
David just won his PC (physically challenged) division
at the National Championships in New York City this past weekend.
This makes David a FOUR time National Champion. Not too shabby for
an Athens boy, eh?
David says he's setting his sights on Xterra Nationals and Worlds
next. The boy is getting to become quite the record breaker. Personally
I can't even begin to imagine how tough it has to be to try and do
all this with Multiple Sclerosis.

ROCKET ROCKS!
Team ROCKET Tri-Club made a big impact at the
Monster Triathlon this past Saturday in Pulaski TN. Race Director
Scott Landis had done a superb job setting this event up and has
continued to make improvements
each year. The event ran as smooth as silk, thanks to Scott and
his many volunteers. The “Monster Hill” lived up to
its name leaving this old guy totally anerobic in the first few
miles of the bike. After the downhill, I was able to get my breathing
back in order.
Team ROCKET members racing were;
Newest member Scott Bigelow (first race after two years of lay off)
Barbie Cole (2nd in age group, also after a two year lay off)
Chris Davis (1st age group, 4th overall)
Denise Gerrity (1st age group)
Mike Gerrity (3rd age group)
Rick Greif (1st age group)
Gayle Marbury (1st age group)
Hopefully I didn’t miss anyone. Great job by all, you did
our club proud! If you have never done this race, you really should
put it on the calendar for next year.
I’m going to include my personal bike set-up notes here. This
fits under the FYI category. I have been playing with my set-up
on the bike since purchasing a new bike early this Spring. On Saturday
I made a few radical changes. I moved the saddle as far forward
as possible, slid the aerobars forward as well, and raised the seat
post to make sure my legs were getting enough extension with the
forward seat position. Based on Cindy Martin’s advice, I try
to have between 10-15 degrees bend at the knee when at the bottom
of the pedal stroke. I’m calling this the “Slammed Forward”
position. This bike course (Monster Tri) is probably the toughest
sprint tri bike course around. I rode the course fairly well (for
me anyhow) averaging just under 19 mph. But the big eye opener was
transitioning to the run. With the Slammed Forward position, my
legs felt outstanding from the first stride to the last. I had no
tightness and was able to keep a very quick turnover rate. It was
one of the best feeling runs I’ve had in a long time. My advice,
…play with your bike set-up!

The
Newmans Do TriAmerica
Two of our current
club members, Dorothy and Larry Newman recently went to Houston
to visit their son, and like any good triathlete would do, they
just happened to schedule their visit at the same time there was
a race in the area. Way to go guys!
Dorothy and Larry Newman represented Team Rocket at the TriAmerica
National Triathlon Series Tour in Houston, Texas, 14-5 June. Their
son, who lives in Houston competed with them. It was a typical triathlon….too
long. too tough and too hot, but they loved it. It was a well organized,
well run race with a pretty good goodie bag….just look at
the back of Dorothy’s car. She is sporting a triathlon tag
holder. Their times can be seen on “chiptimes.com”
(How about those "hot" shirts!)
